The Senior Citizen and the Art of Motorcycle Dodging

When I’m heading straight and driving the car, I take the rightmost lane. I try to hug the median so I need to battle people only on my left and not on both sides. When I ride the two-wheeler, I take the leftmost lane. When I’m a pedestrian, I take the sidewalk unless it’s unusable or nonexistent. So, imagine my ire the other day when a motorbike rider, who was riding close to the centre of the road, honked at me. I was about to step off the sidewalk because it had been dug up thanks to an overflowing sewer line (and it was finally being fixed just because it happens to be near the house of the new Chief Minister!) I was so annoyed with the motorcyclist that I stood there with my arms akimbo and deliberately sauntered onto the road.

When I mentioned this to my colleague, she narrated a wonderful case. When she was driving along the congested Goods Shed Road (Bangalore), she noticed that the two-wheeler riders were riding on the sidewalk, leaving no room for the hapless pedestrians to walk (actually, this is a common occurrence). This senior citizen was walking on the footpath, and a bully motorbike rider actually honked at him to get off the footpath!

The old man did an amazingly clever thing. He got close to the motorbike, pulled out the key, and threw it far away! YAY! So, now, our arrogant motorbike rider would naturally have found it way more important to get back on his motorbike than beat up or chase the old man! And the old man nonchalantly walked away 🙂

Warning: Don’t try to imitate the old man’s behaviour if you are in/ on a vehicle. A person seeking revenge can easily make a note of your license plate and track you down. Sometimes, you’re less vulnerable when you’re a pedestrian 🙂
